As with a lot of british comedy there's a thread of class conflict running through both. In Keeping Up Appearances you ahve Hyacinth striving to be posh and upperclass, with her working class family dragging her back. In LotSW you have Blamire (and Foggy) striving to be posh, with Compo constantly pricking the pomposity (you can also see it in Edie and Wesley)

BTW...have you seen Roy Clarke's other great sitcom (starring perhaps the UK's finest comedy actor Ronnie Barker, and occasional small appearacnes by Kathy Staff).

All, and I do mean all of the characters in these two series are immediately recognizable to everyone. Once you have lived long enough, probably not very long, we have people like these in our lives. Even though dysfunction in the TV lives of these characters is meant to make us laugh, we would not find them as funny if we did not recognize the antics and mannerisms as those of out loved ones and acquaintances.
these show have depth and truth and are valued for reasons most people do not really consider all that often. They are better at revealing "true life" than the serials and soaps. Thanks for the blog !

To watch online there are many accounts people have put up, one or two of them has every episode, I'm pretty sure. Some of the best are:

I wish I had a better answer, but you've probably got it. What I've always heard is the BBC programs tend to be a lot, and PBS can't always afford them. I got fed up with our PBS because they only played maybe five episodes, only certain ones from a DVD they gave away during their so called "pledging," and then took it off totally. My guess would be too, if LOTSW was more popular here (I mean, compared to other BBC comedies,) it would get more playing time, like "Are You Being Served?", "Blackadder," and others. They seem to have resources to put into them, at least at times, so it may also be that there just isn't enough interest in certain areas. I guess you could try emailing them, letting them know how much you enjoy the series, but I don't know how well they listen to that. Thankfully, LOTSW is plentyful online these days, however I feel your pain. I stopped watching TV altogether around 2005, and one of the last things I saw was LOTSW, just before they canned it. I see the struggle continues.

How do I get LOTSW broadcast in my locale? The Public Broadcast Stations have stopped showing them. Does the BBC charge too much for them? I would love to know as I am sure that the PBS folks will claim this is the case.

Good point! I couldn't remember when, but I knew I had heard there was some version of it before, just rather vague on it. No, truly it isn't a "world premier," but it is a bigger production, as you say, with the former having not been professional.
